Event: Marshall of Singapore: the extraordinary life and times of David Saul Marshall.
From: 12 December 2008-20th febuary 2009.
Where: Singapore National Library level 10
Opening hours: 10am-9pm daily, except Public Holidays.

What is the objective of the event? Give a brief background to this event.
The event’s objective was to inform others about the various achievements and milestones set by David Marshall in his lifetime. As he was a significant political figure in Singapore, this event would be a useful source of information for students and teachers who are learning and teaching more about history.
The event was basically a room with posters and stories arranged in chronological order, Museum style. Other items that were of importance to Marshall like his wig, his pipe, and medals from the war were all shown to the public as well.

Who is the target audience?
Probably students and patrons of the library, which can also include political figures who were inspired by Marshall’s actions in history.

Is the event reported in the media? If yes, How widely is it reported? If no, why do you think the media did not cover the event? What do you think could be done to attract media coverage?
The event was not very well publicized, only through notifications on the NLB’s website, as well as a few mentions in the events in the Straits Time’s Life section in the events, a very small paragraph. Posters around the library were the last source of publicity that I know of. I believe that library could have sent emails to schools and teachers to inform them on this event, to achieve what I believe for them are the target audience. That could be one of the ways. Another would be to get a news feature on how some political figures from Singapore went to the event to check it out, and this would let more people who read the papers know about the event.

Assume you are the manager overseeing this project. Evaluate the success/failure of this event. How would you do it differently for greater success?
Depending on the target audience, I believe that that has been met, seeing as when I was at the event, there were people who actually took the effort to come up and have a look at the event, they ranged from people of old age, to chatty students who took out note books to scribble down notes. Seeing that the event wasn’t of a large scale, as it only occupied a fairly large room, I beliebe the event was a success. However, it could be have been made better. If the event had a location on a more accessible location, more would know about it, even if they weren’t there to with the purpose of seeing it. For example, placing the event on the ground floor of the library, at the podium outside.

Interview with a manager

What is your Job Responsibility as a manager?

As a Finance administration Manager, I am incharge of the human resource and payroll of my team. I am required to identify my staffs strengths and delegate jobs to them depending on these strengths. I need to schedule datelines for my staff to get their job done by how long to obtain the done work. Not only do i have to do this, but i also have to either personally train my staff for certain jobs, or send them for trainings. Monitoring my staff's progress and efficiency is also important in bringing about maximum profits and turnovers. The main thing about what i do is to plan what i want my staff to do, Delagate the jobs, and monitor their progress.

My management style is that of a benevolant autocrat, must be compassionate to staff, always respect them even if they dont do the same to you. However, be clear and forceful in your expectations, and make sure that you have been heard out. Difficulties faced are mainly from problematic staff that are lazy, or those that only give problems but not solutions. Customer issues would include complaints and payment issues, quote example where a payment of something in the range of $10000-9000 not being paid to the company for their services rendered. Resulting in a small claims court case. In order to overcome the staff issues, it is important to know the strengths of these people, understand how they are, work with these positives, and motivate and empower them to become better, and more efficient staff. Only through being independant on her own was she able to let others under her grow more independant as well. Always aim for staff to do value added work, as the main purpose is to let everyone in the team excel and grow. For customers, the main way to deal with their complaints and payment issues is to firstly have patience, mantain amiable, and show as much respect as you can. Show them the right attitude, before you negotiate, then you pacify. Always learn new ways to solve new problems and use what you learn from them to prevent them from new problems from arising.

In order to be a good manager, one has to respect the staff, even if they do not do so. This would show how competent you are. A good manager will not only be competent, but also be ethical, adaptable, and still have integrity and responsibility. Always be professional and competent, and never stop learning. Still attends classes to constantly improve herself. Being creative is also good, as thinking out of the box is always useful in debugging. Anaysis before action is a must for managers, which would smoothen out the enforcement of the staff's jobs and ensure that your expectations are met, before empowering your staff to become of higher quality.
